Overhauling Gasket Package Not All Fitted

The producer company may have made a mistake in packaging the materials for Toyota L series which may have identical gaskets but not exactly the same, or its really the one but they made a mistake in the measurement and so produced a not fitted one.

I am referring to the head cover gasket referred to as valve gasket for Toyota L upon knowing that the mechanic had a difficulty in placing the gasket during the assembly of the engine. Because it is in the package so he believes it must be the right one that fits.

Until after a week of test drive that I noticed when we opened it for timing adjustment and to check the valve gaps. It was really stretched and it shows that it is not a normal fitting.

Because the alignment of the gasket is somewhat tilted I have to find for something that is better. Because there was no available head cover gasket for Toyota L I bought the one for Toyota 2L head cover gasket and it fits. The video below will prove the anomaly about the case.

The video above shows the fact that not all in the package of Toyota L overhauling gasket are fitted. Even if you reverse the placement it’s really too far to fit.

I wonder why the company causes confusion to Toyota L series users and customers by having different series with the same parts. The engine is Toyota L and you have to look for Toyota L parts and accessories. It is not bad if you can find parts exactly the same in Toyota 2L but when you are given a package with any of the parts unfit that makes it considerably defective and the producer company has to replace it for free.

 

Reminder and Warning
Be sure to inspect all overhauling gasket package before you use it one by one. The only way to assure that you have all the gaskets fit is to take with you to the auto supply center all the samples to be replaced.
This is to avoid extra ordinary expenses in buying another part you needed just because some of what is in the package is unfit.

It is also saving time and effort in doing repairs to your car or vehicle.

On the Toyota L engine, valves are arranged from 0 to 3 marks. It is found on the flat surface of the valves. If you cannot find it there examine the whole valve to be sure that nothing will be interchanged rather they are in the proper places.

The arrangement should start from cylinder one which is the nearest to the front of the engine. If that is the case cylinder one receives exhaust and intake valves with no marks and the other cylinders receive the valves with their own marks from 1 to 3 respectively.

The standard for most of the cars is to change oil every 5,000 kilometers or three months, whichever comes first or as often as possible depending on your driving habits and the road conditions.

Have it drained only just after a hard drive, at least 15 kilometers.  When the oil is hot and thin, sludge will not settle and harden at the bottom of the oil pan.  Or if you leave the car at a service station for a change later in the day, the cold sludge won’t flow out.

The piston, piston rings, oil rings, and connecting rods are parts that should be installed and connected to each other before it will be inserted into the block.

In installing or assembling these parts be sure to wet it with oil. The purpose is that on the first crank of the engine the engine oil is not yet distributed to the engine parts.  At least before the oil reaches all the moving parts there is lubrication provided so it will not immediately get hot.

There is only two that you needed.  It is the snap ring pliers that you use in placing the rings and the piston ring installer pliers.

It is such important to be careful enough in placing all the parts.  Remember the piston has marks and that is according to arrangements when inserted in the cylinders.  Observe the dots on the images below.

Not only the piston has marks, but the connecting rod also has.  If you are keen on observing the marks such as dots you will never be mistaken to pair the right piston with the right connecting rod. And of course, you will not also be mistaken in the insertion of right pistons on the right cylinders of the block.

Cylinder 1 must be the nearest in the front of the engine.  It is the nearest to the camshaft timing gear and cylinder 4 must be the nearest to the transmission.

 

With that hints to bear in mind, you won’t waste time disassembling the engine when you come to your senses that you have not been conscious enough to observe marks provided by the manufacturers as the guide in assembling after doing an overhaul.

Diesel Fuel Shut off Valve Functions-Issues

This fuel shutoff valve is a part of the injection pump that functions as the shutoff of fuel and engine.  It is operated by a current from the battery through the ignition switch.

When the ignition switch is on and current goes to this shutter it opens and fuel will flow to the injection pump that supplies the nozzles spraying fuel to the combustion chambers. When the ignition switch is off this valve will close and no fuel will flow to the injection pump.

How do you know this?

I would like to share with you our experience in the Toyota L engine. We have just overhauled it, the radiator was overhauled too, and the injection pump calibrated.  Everything should have been fine as expected.  The engine was cranked and it started smoothly, the engine noise is just right, the thick white smoke is gone and is about to be on a road test.

But as the engine is warmed up it suddenly stalled, no matter how you crank it in order to start it didn’t. Because it’s newly overhauled maybe the fuel has not yet fully saturated the injection pump and air maybe inside. The remedy is to loosen the nozzles so that air may be blown out.

This process if the air had been totally out from the injection pump fuel should follow to come out of the nozzles. If there are no bubbles coming out it’s time to tighten it.  Loosening the nozzles to test if there is fuel in it should be done one after the other.

However, this time there was no air coming out and there was no fuel too.  So how would the engine start if there is no fuel supplied by the nozzles? It will not. It’s good the fuel hose is transparent and obviously, the fuel is still sufficiently available from the tank.

The next step is to check if there is a current going to the fuel shutoff valve.  So we checked it and there was no current.  Upon examination, it was the wiring connected to the shutoff valve that has been cut off inside, however, it was not obvious until we stretched it out and it was only connected temporarily through the insulation of the wiring.

When the connection was restored the engine was cranked and it started until it was tested on the road and until this time of writing the engine did not stall.

Facts About Motor Oil

At any speed, oil in a small car works twice as hard as in a big car.

Smaller cars with their 4-cylinder engines circulate their oil twice as fast as in the big sixes and eights.  They run at 25 to 30 percent higher revolutions throughout their entire performance range. So there is more friction and heat in the small car engine.  The heat in a small engine can drain the life out of an oil which can keep it from cleaning and lubricating properly.

It can also cause sludge and other kinds of deposits to form and clog passageways in the engine.  From there it’s only a short step to pre-ignition, power loss, and premature wear.  Small, as well as big cars, need proper maintenance and care.  Although small cars are easy on gas, easy to handle, and have smaller engines, they’re not easy on oil.




Changing Oil

Filling with New Oil

Supplemental additives are not essential and are an unnecessary expense.  A good oil brand already has special additives in it.

If you want your engine to run well, do not add things to your crankcase. Put in good quality motor oil and change it only according to the manufacturer’s recommendation.  Use only brand name oil and those that are marked and conforming to SAE specifications.

You should also know that “SE” designation for motor oil which meets the requirement for high-temperature engine performance is recognized by automotive and petroleum industries.

An oil with low viscosity grade (like SAE 10W) will flow freely to help a cold engine start, especially during cold weather.

An oil with high viscosity grade (like SAE 40) is thick enough to protect a hot engine, especially during summer.

But aside from those SAE ratings, there are so-called multigrade that can do both (like SAE 10W-40).

Fill up to the full line on the level gauge.  If low, add oil up to the F line.  Never overfill the crankcase.  Too high on oil level lets he crankshaft splash through the oil causing excessive foaming and may lead to excessive oil pressure.

To prevent overfilling, the engine should be shut off for about two minutes before removing the dipstick.  This allows oil in the lines and engine passages to drain back into the crankcase.  Note:  when checking the level of engine oil, make sure the car is standing on level ground.

If oil is leaking out around the drain plug car’s oil pan, check if the plug is tight.  If it is tight do not apply a lot of muscle to make it super tight.  Over tightening the plug will ruin thread since it has a fine thread.  Chances are the plug gasket has deteriorated and needs replacing.

Changing oil is not just a practice that car owners love to do.  It is a significant thing in the life and service of the car engine.  An efficient car engine oil maintenance means efficient delivery of services to people by the person who owns it.


The Problem of Oil Leak

Before we leave this discussion I would like to remind everyone an issue that anyone might raise.  Someone might say, why is the engine oil dissipates early before the scheduled oil change?  I keep on adding a half liter or nearly a liter every 500 hundred kilometers or every long drive yet I do not see any drip on the floor when in the garage.

The question is, how did you know it?  Is it through the oil pressure gauge or through the dipstick?

Often times the oil pressure gauge doesn’t tell the truth, especially to old cars maybe because of electrical or hardware problems.

But it is wise for the driver to always double check it through the dipstick as I usually do.  Now, this is what I discovered lately. I did not see any drop of oil in the park area but when I checked on the dipstick the oil has dissipated.  In fact, I had twice added oil to fill it to the measure because oil change is yet to come.

One time when I was checking something my eyes were set on the stabilizer.  It was a little bit wet with oil and I thought it was just an accidental splatter.  But that led me to think I have to see where it come from.

I have to remove the cover as you see in the video below so I can check where the leak is coming from.

After removing the cover I have to determine what part is leaking.  I have prepared a video for you to see what I did.  You can watch it below.


Fixing the oil leak

Sometimes it’s deceiving what part is leaking but don’t be in a hurry to do things.  You have to be patient in locating the source of the problem.  From the wet wheel stabilizer that led you to open your engine’s front cover shown below (whatever be the model).  Trace where the oil come and don’t be fooled by what you see at the lowest part that may have been just a deposit of a long leak.

Start determining traces of oil leaks from the top suspected possible parts that could easily be perforated through high heat like cylinder head cover gasket, camshaft oil seal, cylinder head gasket, front main oil seal, crankshaft oil seal, and oil pan gasket.

Now, this is a warning to every car owner, a driver, or anyone who uses a car.  Be a keen observant with regards to oil dissipation in the engine.

If there are leaks you can see through either of the oil seals identified that is a lot easier and fewer expenses by just replacing those parts.


More Serious Issue
However, if there are no leaks anywhere outside your engine but oil dissipates before the next oil change schedule, that is a more serious issue.  Leaks are no longer outside the engine but it’s inside it.  Why?  Your valve seals or the valve seats may now need replacement.  If not the valve seals it maybe the piston rings so you need to inspect the emission smoke of your car.  A related article (please see the article on bluish smoke) will show you why I said this for your guide.

Toyota L Valve Wrong Setting

On this topic, Toyota L Valve Wrong Setting, there are two things I would like to share with you this time.  First, the wrong valve clearance.  Second, setting the valve clearance in the wrong way.

We have to understand that the exhaust valve and the intake valve are different in sizes and that gives us hint that we are to set valve clearances in different measurements.

As you can see it here on the cylinder head the bigger valve head paralleled to the Exhaust Manifolds are the exhaust valves and the smaller valve heads in between the exhaust Manifolds are the intake valves.

 

So here are the two wrong things that we have to avoid when we set the gaps for Toyota L.

First Wrong

I’ve known three mechanics with different orientations in setting the valve clearance and I believe them all at first.  But I have to know who of them is saying the truth by having my car as the specimen.

Two of them said both the valve gaps or clearance for the intake and the exhaust are the same.  To prove the validity of the statements I’ve let the valves adjusted with that way.  After it has been set I drove my vehicle from around forty kilometers and there I sensed the gap adjustment is not correct.  The gap was .305mm or .012 inches and I was annoyed when I was driving.  Every time I accelerate the engine noise was much louder and it does not have the power to pull its body weight including the passengers in it.  In fact, I pitied the engine for as if I am the one suffering the heavy load. So I’ve proven that the two mechanics were wrong in their stock knowledge in Toyota L valve clearance gap.

Second wrong

This thing is the how to do valve gap. Again the two say that valve gapping is taken in between the rocker arm and valve tip.  The video below will show you the wrong procedure to do valve gapping in between the rocker arm and valve tip.

 

In Toyota L engine it is right and proper when the valve clearance is taken in between the rocker arm and the camshaft. In the video below you will see the right way in valve gapping or setting valve clearance for this particular engine.

After we have watched the videos we have identified which is wrong and right, the improper and the proper.  It is up to you to do the right thing and test it by yourself.  I’m sure you will not be sorry for doing it.

Toyota L Valve Clearance

We believe proper valve clearance adjustment sets the engine’s power and fuel efficiency of your car.

What are the things to keep in mind in administering proper valve clearance?

  • it enhances proper combustion
  • it boosts fuel efficiency
  • it enhances the engine power
  • it prevents premature wears of valves, valve seats.

From the first to the fourth considerations are interrelated and results of the other.  Why? Because proper valve clearance permits the proper mixture of air and fuel for combustion.  When fuel is properly burned there is power in the engine.  The engine, therefore, emits lesser harmful carbon dioxide and that is more friendly to the environment.

In the proper fittings of parts through valve clearance, it prevents premature wear because the pressure and force exerted on the moving parts such as intake and exhaust valves against the valve seats are measured and that would last a long time.

If the clearance between the valves and valve seats are too thin there will be a small amount of air and fuel to be supplied to the chamber and it lacks what is needed for each piston to compress.  On the exhaust valves, a thin clearance will not allow all burned fuel to be exhausted.

On the other hand, when the gap is too wide between valves and valve seats the tendency is that the fuel will not be properly burned to due to overexposure.  Meaning the combustion chamber is not well sealed this is both the intake and exhaust valves.  This might even allow the fire to be exhausted and cause overheating.

Overheating can result from both improper valve clearance and when not attended to will give another problem.
