Engine Power Failure Causes and Symptoms

We are to determine what are the symptoms and causes of an engine power failure.  A car is just like a human body, do you agree?  When I feel a stomach ache I am having a symptom, a symptom that speaks of a cause, a cause that should be addressed.

Stomach ache is not an illness rather it is a symptom.  This is through with a car we have to be observant, why is it having a loss compression, having an unusual loud knock, and emits bluish smoke?  It is giving the message that there is a problem causing it and that is what we are going to find and fix.


1) Loss compression, A Symptom

Let us assume that carburetion and compression are all precise from the assembly and is expected of a brand new car. Here, I want to talk about a car that is used for several years that has come to the point that it can no longer deliver the desired power as it should be.

Referring to compression, this is the power of the piston to cause all moving parts of the engine. The experienced driver knows this during the engagement of first to fourth gears. When you press on the accelerator you are putting more fuel and air in the combustion chamber and the stronger the piston the engine has more power. If the driver feels the engine is getting tired of carrying the capacity limit of all the things and human on board there is a compression problem.


Why is loss compression a symptom of a crankshaft failure?



Remember oil is very important to run your vehicle. Without this, a brand new vehicle’s engine will easily be toasted. When your car is on the stage of a loss compression due to worn piston rings and liners you are possibly losing much oil in the unexpected time.

Every time you run your car on low oil, under high heat conditions over an extended period the oil can become dangerously thick. Corrosive sludge will cause hard deposits on the cylinder head, pitted valves. The thickened, oxidized oil loses its fluidity and the ability to flow easily through the engine. This gives rise to metal-to-metal contacts and the first to be damaged are usually the connecting rod bearings. Because these are purposely built for the crankshaft to give smooth revolution when stuck or crushed it would surely damage the crankshaft, if not scratched only, it will be broken.


Possible causes of loss compression:
a) Worn piston rings and liners

In over ten years a car is used you expect the service life of piston rings and liners (sleeves) have come to the point to be replaced. Why? These parts rub each other every time the engine is run. Even the hardest steel in this world that is continually rubbed succumbs to friction and heat. In due time, the clearance needed for proper compression is no longer there because air escapes or released in between the piston rings and liner (sleeve)as the piston moves up and down.

b) Valve leakage
This refers to the valve prevented from being closed. Because it is not closed properly there is fugitive emission from the valve. Why is it called fugitive emission, because this is the one that escapes through the other and unintended holes! Air should only be released when the valve is opened. A common cause of valve leakage is due to dirt, rust, or the seat is damaged.

  • What do you expect when your car has worn piston rings and valves?  Besides loss compression, you will experience more fuel and more oil consumption. Changing engine oil should be enough until the desired mileage is reached, that is 5,000 kilometers. If your car doesn’t have speedometer calculate the distance you travel every time you use your car. Depending on how regularly you use your car, it may reach the minimum of three months up.


2)  Unusual Loud Knock inside the Engine

In any engine, you will notice some audible fine knocks produced by valve clearances.  When you hear this it doesn’t bother you because it goes with the engine in even timings.  In fact, a good engine knock can be noisier when oil supply is not in its required level.  However, if you fill it to the right measurement the knocks slightly vanishes.

A loud knock in an engine cannot be minimized by oil and valve adjustments is a symptom of something serious that should be given attention to before your car stalls you along the way.  Even you overfill with oil your engine, the sound doesn’t minimize but instead, it worsens.  The possibility could be any of the parts connected to the piston-like connecting rod, piston pin, or connecting rod bearings are about to be replaced.

When your car overheats accompanied by knocks and you feel a decreased power when you accelerate, a possible problem is connecting rod bearings being slowly crushed.


3)  Bluish Smoke

When your car emits bluish thick smoke this means oil is being mixed with your fuel into the combustion chamber.  Why the piston rings maybe are already worn?

Secondly, there is a leakage in the intake valve (s).  The valve seal may have been perforated or worn does oil passes through the valve stem and mixed with air and fuel.

Loud Knocks Stopped the Car

Loud knocks in your engine are not to be ignored rather you have to pay attention and give immediate inspection before it leads you to a severe situation. I would like to share with you and experience to explain what these mean to a car owner.

My friend and her wife traveled around 60 kilometers distance using their 1996 model Toyota L, Tamaraw series, jitney type AUV.  Approximately 30 kilometers far from their point of destination and they are bound to they have noticed knocking of engine parts.

Hearing that tolerable but disturbing sound, the loud knocks, they continued and were able to reach a ten-kilometer distance.  As they climbed up the road the car stalled.  They rested for a while to cool the engine that is above 180 degrees F temperature.  Maybe the temperature gauge was not functioning correctly because 180 degrees is still tolerable.

The engine was started and upon trying to advance had a loud knock and right there the engine is dead.  They left their car in the rural site taking a bus down to the town.  The following day their car was towed to a mechanic to their shop for an engine overhaul.

Possible causes could be traced from several reasons like overused oil, lack of oil, defective valve seats, valves.

Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam will be the first countries where the product will be released for sale.

I don’t have a problem here it is expected that any oil or additive you’ll add to your engine must contribute efficiency to it.

However, they should specify what metal they are referring to engine components.  I would say that those are the piston, piston pins, piston rings and the sleeves that could have direct access to the fuel with the additive.


Enhances engine power

They say this additive can double the horsepower of your engine.  By how?

If the company gives me a sample for my car which is an old-old one, much better and I will show it to the world.

Let’s do mathematics.  My car has 72 horsepower output (54kw) if I will use that additive it will become 144 horsepower.  That’s how simple I understand the statement, maybe you differ from my understanding.

Could you imagine that this is more than upgrading from Toyota L which is 72 horsepower to the 5L engine which gives 97 horsepower only?  You upgraded to four times newer and advance engine but the horsepower rose to only 25 horsepower, and this is the reality of inventions, they cannot just double the horsepower.

How come that the fuel additive can double a 72 horsepower of an engine?  It’s unbelievable that by just adding additive you double your engine’s horsepower.  It’s impractical, it’s even illogical.

In fuel consumption when your engine horsepower is doubled meaning your expenses will be lessened by 50% isn’t it?  So if my car consumes a liter of diesel for fifteen kilometers and by adding the additive it should only use 7.5 liters in 15-kilometer run.

But it’s not, their findings proved fuel consumption is only reduced up to 17%.  So my fuel consumption is only reduced by 2.5 kilometers.

There’s a big inconsistency between the promotional statements and the factual results.

Automatically Regenerates Engine Component.

Their exact words state:

From the moment you put this new fuel additive in the fuel tank, your engine will automatically start regenerating.  The durability of its metal parts will increase up to 5-folds.  You wouldn’t have to constantly think how to protect the engine.  You will not hear any rattle nor feel any vibrations and will most likely forget that your engine has been in disrepair until recently.”

To our readers please think it over and over again that this is a fuel additive, not an oil additive.  So how come that a rattling engine becomes quiet when it will only pass through the combustion chamber.  It will not go to your engine oil so it has nothing to do with different parts of the engine like camshaft, crankshaft, bearings and all others connected to them.  Neither it will harden those all moving parts needing oil except for the piston rings and sleeves because these can be directly be supplied during the combustion process.

Come to think of a fuel additive that will increase the durability of a metal five times is absolutely a lie.  Metal is a metal and nothing can add to its durability than the substance mixed when it was melted into a form of an engine part.

The bad thing here is that you can only notice the result after several weeks of using the additive.  While the additive is paid upon delivery you will have the access to the person who brought you the thing you have bought with thousands of Philippine currency.

What if it did not work?  Where can you find the person or an office?  Why not make it available in fuel refilling stations so you know whom you are charging accountability.

To me, if you don’t know anybody personally who have tried or tested the additive you should not rely on persons who deliver to you at any time and any place.  You might be buying an imitation that will actually add trouble to your vehicle.

It is good to be careful and prudent enough then to be sorry at the end. Don’t be fooled by counterfeit for scams are very much available around the internet world.  My friend’s in-law used a fuel additive sometime ago and his engine exploded but the company has nothing to do with it to help with the expenses for a new engine replacement.

Toyota L Valve Clearance Adjustment

Valve Clearance adjustment for Toyota L set to .015 inches (.38mm) for exhaust and (.27mm) for intake. I drove this car to test for about 100 kilometers and it’s pretty good in its performance. I did not see the temperature has something alarming.    It’s cool.

This old car is still working properly.  According to Wikipedia,  It is the first diesel engine from Toyota to use a rubber timing belt in conjunction with a SOHC head.

Engines like 2L-II and 2L-T are still in production to the present day. Vehicles with the diesel engine were exclusive to Toyota Japan dealership locations called Toyota Diesel Store locations until the sales channel was disbanded in 1988.

So here I posted this as a product of my discovery.  A discovery not based on theory only but from direct experience to help others who own the same model and will be able to guide others with the same principle that can be applied to their own cars.
