What is a Power Steering Pump

What is a Power Steering Pump?

Replace Power Steering Pump-Toyota L power steering pump

The power steering pump is an auto part that is used to help the driver whether a woman or a man steer the wheels in less effort regardless of car or truck sizes. This part is important especially when the car is moving forward and backward slowly more particularly on curve roads and maneuvers.

The pump is located in front of the engine and is attached to the steering gearbox.  Driven by the engine crankshaft through a belt-pulley mechanism, the steering pump compresses the hydraulic fluid which helps rotates the steering gearbox when steered by the driver.

When a car or a truck is equipped with power steering pump it would be easier for anyone even a woman to drive because the steering wheel is manageable and controllable by less effort.

However, if the power steering pump is defective even the strongest man will find difficulty and steering the wheels because you exert much effort.

Symptoms of a bad, failing, defective Power Steering Pump

  • A Squealing or Whining Sound

You will hear this at the moment you start your engine. It’s a sound that is abnormal, a sound that this time only you noticed about it. It’s not a part of the normal sounds that you always hear when you drive.

If you hear that kind of sound that means you are now having a failing, bad, or defective power steering pump. However, it does not mean that everything is bad, failing or defective and cannot be fixed. If you have heard that for the first time maybe your power steering pump is just lacking automatic transmission fluid (ATF). You better refill it. If you have refilled it and the sound remains maybe the next problem that you will encounter is stiff steering wheels.

I have tried to recondition this power steering pump but it doesn’t work well. Its performance is not good as it should be so I have to look for a replacement.

That’s the only thing to be done to avoid wasting your effort especially when you are no longer comfortable with your steering wheels.

  1. Hi,

I feel like I would now know when a steering pump is faulty, I would recognise the noise and be alerted to needing to do something about the  pump, be it repair or replacement.

I’m not sure I like the comment “even a woman” this may well turn your female readers off. :-))

    • Thank you, Louise, for your interest in the discussion. With regards to the woman, you expressed a certain level of thinking and I’m happy you are one of the empowered women who know their right.  So that gives me the option not to revise for in doing so we can teach more women as they read this discussion.

  2. Thanks for this informative post,  I am a car owner with little or no knowledge about it but I know I do experience difficulty with the wheels turning, fortunately I came across your website searching for a solution online and I hope this replacement will work effectively like the previous one. Thanks for sharing this.

    • I am pleased, Seun Afotanju, if this post addressed your problem on your car. If you have the symptoms I mentioned for sure your power steering pump is failing.  Maybe they can repair it, you have to talk to your mechanic if he can fix it so you need not to replace it.

  3. Hi, the importance of power steering pump can never be emphasized. It saves one lots of stress when it comes to maneuvering the vehicle around curves or moving the car forward as the case may be.

I have had such experience with our car, before it was fixed within the few days it developed fault, my husband had a difficult time at the steering. I have often wondered what could be the cause.

The symptoms you listed are exactly the same we experience. I remember vividly that day, the car starting with a squealing sound.  Thanks for sharing this post.

    • Hi, Gracen. It’s good you were able to fix the issue that you came across with your car. I hope you did not spend much on it.

Now you know what that is all about you can share it with your friends so they will know it also and promptly fix the problem if they will encounter it.

  4. This is a great article. Power steering pump is one of the most important part of any vehicle be it car or truck. it allows the steering wheel to be turned with little effort than it would have been required without the pump. Most mordern vehicles has this system. I drive cars with this component but I don’t know neither the location nor the look. Many like me don’t know too. Thanks to you we know now.

I look forward to reading more on vehicles on this page.

    • I’m happy, Jay, that you learned something from this discussion. I learned it too through hard work because I want to discover the different parts and their functions.

Thank you for your interest in reading about vehicles.
